Devil’s Head, A Well-Known County Landmarkrk
Located in the heart of Douglas County, Devil’s Head Peak is one of the most identifiable landmarks in the area. It also is the highest peak along the Rampart Range and home to the last remaining fire lookout tower along the front range of Colorado. Established in 1912, the lookout was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Because of its historic significance to our area the, chapter is helping to fund the replacement of the missing signage at the trailhead and along the trail.
A popular hiking destination, Devil’s Head sees over 20,000 people wind their way up to the summit each year. The trail to the fire lookout rises 950 feet in elevation in just over 1.4 miles and ends at the foot of 143 steep steps which lead up to the tower. From the observation decks, the views are spectacular and on a clear day extend at least 100 miles in every direction.
The peak, so named because of its resemblance to a devil’s horn, is thought by many to closely resemble a sleeping Indian, which is the former name many old timers still prefer.
